We are thrilled to provide you with an update on our 1% for Maine® efforts. For Q2, our initiative was Education; we committed to devoting our money to organizations focused on providing extra support and opportunities, both in and out of the classroom to Maine’s children to ensure that they have the tools and skills they need to succeed. The strength of the spring real estate market helped to increase our donation amount and we ended up having $52,000 to divide among many wonderful grants. After much consideration, we chose to support seven different nonprofits in three Maine counties.
The first grant we chose to support was one submitted by the Youth & Family Outreach. Here are the quick details:
Organization Mission: Youth and Family Outreach creates opportunities that enhance independence and learning to support the quality of life for children, youth, and families in Greater Portland.
Grant Mission: Youth & Family Outreach (YFO) is a comprehensive, high-quality early childhood education program that transforms the lives of young children and supports parent workforce participation to build strong a community. YFO has a rich, unwavering history of meeting the needs of Portland’s children, teens, and families since 1844 initially as a community outreach mission of the Portland Ministries at Large working to prevent homelessness.
As a long-standing partner in the West Bayside community, YFO, since 1986, and in its current form, operates a full-day, full-year non-profit early care and education program serving children six weeks to five years of age and their families with the primary goal to alleviate the effects of poverty, ensure children are prepared to succeed in K-12 education, and parents complete their education and enter the workforce. Dedicated to diversity, YFO trains and hires 50% of its teachers from the immigrant community.
To address the enormous need in Greater Portland for quality early care and education, YFO conducted a feasibility study in the fall of 2019 and subsequently agreed with Portland Housing Development Corporation (PHDC). Together, YFO and PHDC have embarked on an ambitious plan that will transform the West Bayside community in Portland, and which is founded on the belief that safe and affordable home, high-quality early childhood care and education, and culturally inclusive family support will increase the opportunity for more families to grow and live with a sense of place, purpose, well-being, and financial stability.
